How to Play Piano with Your Computer Keyboard
You can play a surprisingly complete piano using only the keys on a laptop or desktop keyboard. This is how the layout works in Hey Piano 4U.
The key layout
The middle row of letters plays the white keys, and the row above it plays the black keys, in the same pattern as a real piano.
| Row | Keys | Plays |
|---|---|---|
| Home row | A S D F G H J K L ; ' | White keys |
| Top row | W E T Y U O P | Black keys |
| Z and X | Z (down) and X (up) | Shift the octave |
| Space | Space bar | Plays the next step in a song, or plays and pauses in Watch mode |
The black keys are placed where they sit above the white keys on a piano: W sits between A and S, E between S and D, and there is no black key between D and F, just like E and F on a real keyboard.
Tips for better playing
- Keep your left hand on A S D F and your right hand on J K L ; so your fingers rest in a natural position.
- Use Z and X to move the range up or down instead of reaching for far keys.
- Some computer keyboards can only register a few keys at once. If a chord does not sound, try a different combination or use a USB MIDI keyboard.
Playing songs
For songs, you do not need the layout at all: in Any-key mode, press Space or any key and the trainer plays the next step. Switch to Designated keys when you want the computer keyboard to match the lit keys exactly.
Going further
A computer keyboard is a great starting point, but it does not respond to how hard you press. If you want a real piano feel, you can add a USB MIDI keyboard.
