About the tune
Beethoven wrote this short piano piece around 1810. It was not published until 1867, long after his death, and it is catalogued as Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor (WoO 59). Nobody is certain who “Elise” was. The opening rocking figure of E and D-sharp is one of the most recognised piano passages ever written.
How it is arranged here
The arrangement is simplified for learning and is written in 3/8 time at about 76 beats per minute. It has about 8 bars and 44 steps in Any-key mode, where one press plays the whole step. The right hand has 34 notes and the left hand has 17. The lowest note is E2 and the highest is E5.
How to learn it
- Open the song and choose Watch to see and hear it once.
- Switch to Follow. The song waits for you to press each lit key, so there is no timing pressure.
- When Follow feels easy, try Play along and aim for 90% or better. The speed dial lets you start slow, and the coach loops any bars that gave you trouble.
Practice tips
- The first two bars alternate between E and D-sharp, which is a black key. Take the black-key notes slowly and let the lit key guide you.
- The tune is quick, so use the slowest speed at first. Increase the speed dial one step at a time.
Is it free to use and share?
Beethoven died in 1827, so the composition is in the public domain. Our arrangement is simplified, and it is written for practice rather than as a published edition. See our guide to public-domain music for what that means.
